Jesus the King: Understanding the Life and Death of the Son of God

Previously published in hardcover as King's Cross The most influential man to ever walk the earth has had his story told in hundreds of different ways for thousands of years. Can any more be said? Now, Timothy Keller, New York Times bestselling author of The Prodigal Prophet and the man Newsweek called a “C. S. Lewis for the twenty-first century,” unlocks new insights into the life of Jesus Christ as he explores how Jesus came as a king, but a king who had to bear the greatest burden anyone ever has. Jesus the King is Keller’s revelatory look at the life of Christ as told in the Gospel of Mark. In it, Keller shows how the story of Jesus is at once cosmic, historical, and personal, calling each of us to look anew at our relationship with God. It is an unforgettable look at Jesus Christ, and one that will leave an indelible imprint on every reader.

One word. "Incredible"! I have never been an avid reader of any kind. This book was recommended to me and I have not put it down. I have never experienced Christ in this format and quite frankly never knew it could exist for me. Dr Keller explains the life and death of Christ so beautifully that allows for readers to feel like they are actually at the events that took place. This book is incredible and highly recommended. You want to know who Christ is, truly know? Add this book to your collection. You won't be disappointed.

Absolutely riveting book. It is not a light read and don't be concerned if it takes a day or two of meditation to really absorb a chapter. This book would make an outstanding small group Bible study. My daughter "loaned" me her book but I just couldn't stop underlining and writing revelations in the margin. So I bought her a new one and two more for dear friends. I've wept, sung praises to Jesus, and word-smithed words all through this book. If you are not sure about Jesus, read this book by a man who really knows Him personally. You might find that you are very glad you have become much better acquainted. I definitely am.

King's Cross is a study of the Gospel of Mark designed for both followers of Christ and would-be followers of Christ. Tim Keller's expertise is that he is always able to take a passage of Scripture and show how it's all about Jesus. The Bible is not about us, but always finds its purpose in every story in the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. This work is not an exhaustive study of the Gospel of Mark, rather it highlights the two primary themes of Mark: Chapters 1-8 - Christ the King - highlighting His teachings, miracles, and authority as God ; and Chapters 9-16 - Christ the Servant - highlighting His sufferings that culminate in His death on the cross.Keller throughout this book manages to weave in and out how Jesus is the answer to all of the major questions, needs, and realities of life. This book is an excellent reminder for the Christian that all of life only makes sense with Jesus at the center of it. For the non-believer Keller makes a cogent case for the necessity of Christ in his or her life. King's Cross would be an excellent gift to give to college students, co-workers, friends, acquaintances, and family members who are unfamiliar with the main story lines of the Bible. The gospel in the life of Jesus is presented clearly, articulately, and compellingly in this concise presentation of Mark's Gospel. The Gospel of Mark gives more than just information about Jesus. It is the account of the person that every human being longs for. We all desperately need Jesus and Keller brilliantly shows us why. One cannot read this book without desiring to have a deeper connection with the Triune God through a personal and intimate relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Tim Keller’s excellent book “Jesus the King” is “an extended meditation” based upon a series he preached on the Gospel of Mark——a book he believes includes vital features of the Jesus narrative. This is not an exposition of the entire text of Mark, but rather an illumination of some of the more significant passages. Like the structure of the Gospel, the book is divided into two parts——the first half discusses the life of Jesus, while the second half discusses his death, resurrection and purpose. The writing style is accessible to the layperson, even those with little theological background. This is what Keller does so well, laying out an important subject in plain language for all, including new believers as well as unbelievers. This is a book you could give to just about anyone as a means of introducing that person to Jesus Christ. This book was a joy to read.

This book was recommended in a women's bible study group, and it seemed stuffy. However, when I started reading it, it really held my interest. I would recommend it for those wanting to delve more deeply into Mark's gospel, or for others who just want an engaging read.

The C.S. Lewis of the twenty-first century? That is the statement that Newsweek so boldly proclaimed concerning Tim Keller. Nonetheless, he has lived up to the description. I first read Tim Keller when I picked up his book The Prodigal God. Since that day, I have listened to countless sermons and read countless articles by him. I quickly picked up a few of his other books Counterfeit Gods and Generous Justice. You can imagine the excitement when I picked up The King's Cross: The Story of the World in the Life of Jesus. From the inside of the cover: "The most influential man to ever walk the earth has had his story told in hundreds of different ways for thousands of years. Can any more be said?"The answer is absolutely. Written by a scholar with a pastor's heart, Keller looks at the life of Jesus as recorded in the Gospel of Mark. Masterfully written, Keller speaks to both believers and non-believers. Each step of the way, Keller is drawing us to a deeper understanding of Christ and therefore a deeper relationship. The book is divided into two parts: The King and The Cross. In the first part of the book, Keller examines the identity of Christ through specific stories from the Gospel of Mark. He explains and applies scripture in a way that stirs the affections and produces a deeper love for Christ. The second part of the book begins to look at the mission of Jesus. Following the outline of Mark, Keller explains and examines Jesus' journey to the cross. Concluding his book, Keller explains the story of Christ can be our story too. Keller states, "It can be your story as well. God made you to love him supremely, but he lost you. He returned to get you back, but it took the cross to do it. He absorbed your darkness so that one day you can finally and dazzlingly become your true self and take your seat at his eternal feast".As a masterful storyteller, Keller draws us deeply into every story. The story of Jesus comes alive and fresh as we journey through Mark together. The book is of tremendous value. I have already recommended it and given it to a few friends. Anyone seeking to pursue Jesus will benefit from greatly from this book.
